Comment on The new Gmail design – A flop or a stroke of genius? by Klaus Silberbauer

Thanks for a great post, Nina.

The new design is definitely a stroke of genius, IMHO.

Gmail is not a website, its an application. And as such it should not try to play by the rules of websites. It must be responsive, app-like in its behavior, and almost devoid of visual branding. A website is owned by its creator (still - things are changing...), but a piece of software is owned by the user. Even if this software is online. Hotmail isn't bad, but it feels like a service that's kindly provided by Microsoft - Gmail feels as my property, just as software should. And now by skinning the interface I can make it even more mine.

But don't think that Gmail isn't loaded with branding. The way it performs, the fact that it's compatible with almost any browser in the world and that it's never down, these are very strong brand carriers. Also, the fact that Gmail gives you virtually unlimited storage is more a part of the brand than just a neat feature.

The *feeling* of a piece of software is just as - or more - important than the wrapping. Not just in terms of usability, but also in terms of branding. It's like computer games: It's not all about the graphics, it's about the game play. (Gamers will know what I mean).

By letting the user skin the Gmail interface, Google is loosing nothing. On the surface it might be ugly stars, a corny sunset or a desert landscape, but underneath it's pure Google, and that's what counts.

Interesting topic that I've studied quite a bit. I assume that banner ads work in some ways, even though studies show that people don't notice them at all - even if they are placed in connection with relevant content.

You might find this interesting:

They're in Norwegian.
